After a marathon day of competition that stretched from 10 a.m. to nearly 6 p.m., three Fairfield girls tennis players have advanced to the second day of the state tournament, guaranteeing themselves spots in the top eight.
Singles Competition
Natalie Steele fought through a challenging bracket to secure her spot in day two. After dropping her opening match to Harika Cakinberk of North Polk 1-6, 6-3, 6-7, Steele bounced back with consecutive victories. She defeated Clarinda’s Layla Hargis 7-5, 6-2, then edged Assumption’s Lea Patrick in a tight three-set thriller, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0. Steele will face Kaitlyn Bjork from Decorah on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
Senior Poojita Mukadam had a competitive day but fell short of advancing. She opened with a hard-fought loss to Kuemper Catholic’s Charlotte Schwabe 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, before rebounding with a straight-sets victory over Pella Christian’s Ava Breems, 6-2, 6-3. However, her tournament run ended with a loss to North Polk’s Harika Cakinberk, 5-7, 0-6. Her career at Fairfield has come to an end.
Doubles Competition
Ria Ross and Sriya Yammanur mirrored Steele’s resilience in the doubles bracket. After dropping their opening match to Wahlert Catholic’s Annie Elbert and Claire King 6-0, 2-6, 2-6, the duo rallied with back-to-back victories. They outlasted Bishop Heelan’s Maria Ernesti and Kate Kelly in a dramatic three-setter, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0, then defeated Clarinda’s Ellie Cole and Taylin Walter 6-3, 2-6, 1-0. The pair will take on Boone’s Kaylee Kuehl and Livi Schneider on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
Looking Ahead
With three players advancing to day two, all three competitors still have an opportunity to finish in fifth place. Their top-eight finishes are already secured as they continue their pursuit of state medals on Thursday.
