The Fairfield girls tennis team continued their dominant stretch with back-to-back 9-0 victories, sweeping Davis County on Monday, August 24th and Fort Madison on Tuesday, August 25th to improve to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in Southeast Conference play. All five dual matches this season have ended in 9-0 victories.
Monday, August 24th — vs. Davis County
Fairfield opened the week with a 9-0 sweep of Davis County, dropping just one game across all nine matches. Natalie Steele, Ria Ross, Mareyn Dunkin, Faeven Gebremariam, and freshman Kinzley Dunkin each won their singles matches 8-0, while Sriya Yammanur dropped just one game in an 8-1 win over Sadie Moss at No. 3. In doubles, all three Fairfield teams won 8-0 — Steele and Ross over Robinson and Haskell at No. 1, Yammanur and Gebremariam over Moss and Campbell at No. 2, and the Dunkin Duo of Mareyn and Kinzley over Batterson and Bragg at No. 3.
The victory was Fairfield’s first non-conference dual win of the season. Davis County falls to 2-2 overall.
New rankings released Monday showed Fairfield holding steady at ninth in Class 1A as a team, while Natalie Steele cracked the top 10 individually, also coming in at ninth.
Head Coach Travis Dunkin kept the focus on improvement despite the lopsided result. “Good to get on the court and keep working on improving,” he said. “Told each one something to work on during their game tonight.”
Tuesday, August 25th — at Fort Madison
Fairfield followed up with another dominant 9-0 sweep at Fort Madison on Tuesday, dropping just one game across the entire dual. Steele, Ross, Yammanur, Mareyn Dunkin, Gebremariam, and Kinzley Dunkin all won their singles matches 8-0. In doubles, Steele and Ross dropped one game in an 8-1 win at No. 1 over Lucille Zimmerman and Mikah Washington, while Yammanur and Gebremariam won 8-0 at No. 2 and the Dunkin Duo closed out with an 8-0 victory at No. 3.
Coach Dunkin noted the efficiency of the week’s results. Over the last two matches, Fairfield won 144 of 146 games played. Fort Madison falls to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Fairfield returns to action Thursday at Keokuk before heading to Ottumwa for a tournament on Saturday.
