The Carnegie Historical Museum announces the Art and Elizabeth Mitchell Family Farm as the next Century Farm in the Carnegie Farm Series. The Mitchell Family Farm has been in the family for 102 years, was purchased in 1923, and is found in Blackhawk Township of Jefferson County Iowa.
The original purchase included 80 acres which remains the same today.
The Carnegie Farm Series highlights farms in Jefferson County and surrounding areas that have been in a family’s possession between 50-150+ years.
Classification for these farms are listed as:
50+ years | Golden Anniversary Farm
100+ years | Century Farm (as recognized by Iowa Farm Bureau)
150+ years | Heritage Farm (as recognized by Iowa Farm Bureau)
The Art and Elizabeth Mitchell Family Farm will be highlighted during the Fairfield First Friday Art Walk on November 7th, 2025, beginning at 6pm and hosted by Carnegie Museum presenter John Godwin.
A display of the Mitchell Family Farms’ history is available on the third floor of the museum for November. The public is welcome to attend, meet the family, and learn about the history of these farms and what they mean to Jefferson County, Iowa.
