The City of Mount Pleasant has officially begun construction on a major airport expansion project designed to address the growing demand for aircraft hangar space in the region.
The $3.15 million project will add significant capacity to the municipal airport, constructing eight new T-hangars for smaller aircraft and one large corporate hangar. The expansion comes as the airport faces unprecedented demand, with current facilities housing 26 planes while maintaining a waiting list of more than 20 aircraft owners seeking hangar space.
The expansion project received substantial support from state and federal aviation authorities. The City of Mount Pleasant was awarded $2.6 million in combined grants from the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration. The city contributed an additional $550,000 to reach the total project cost of $3.15 million.
Construction activities began clearing farm ground surrounding the airport and conducting initial surveying work.
The expansion directly responds to the significant shortage of hangar space at the airport. With current capacity maxed out and a substantial waiting list, the additional hangars will more than double the airport’s ability to accommodate aircraft owners in the region.
The project positions the city to better serve existing aviation needs while potentially attracting new businesses and aviation-related economic activity. Enhanced airport facilities often serve as economic development tools, supporting business travel and attracting aviation-related industries.
The hangar expansion represents a significant investment in Mount Pleasant’s aviation infrastructure, with benefits expected to extend well into the future. By addressing current capacity constraints and positioning for continued growth, the project demonstrates the city’s commitment to supporting aviation as both a recreational activity and economic driver.
