A southwest Iowa farmer says profitability is one of his biggest concerns heading into fall.
Ray Gaesser of Corning tells Brownfield…
“It’s just not going to be very profitable this year,” he said. “Our local price of corn is about $3.70. That doesn’t make ends meet.”
He says this isn’t the first time he’s dealt with a downturn in the ag economy.
“What I share with folks in my experience in five decades now is that two years out of ten it’s pretty good. Two years out of ten is not very good, and then the other six are just kind of average.”
Gaesser says there are always some ups and downs in agriculture.
“Our friends who have beef cows are doing well and they deserve it. They weren’t doing so well for a long time. The last two or three years they are doing really well.”
He says preparing for down years is critical to a farm’s success.
