The Iowa DNR has issued an Air Quality Alert for the entire state through midnight Friday due to moderate to heavy smoke expected over the next few days. Air quality levels may reach ranges considered unhealthy for sensitive groups—and even for healthy individuals in some areas. People with heart or lung conditions, children, teens, older adults, and anyone who works outside are especially at risk. Until the air clears, it’s best to limit outdoor activities, avoid anything too strenuous, and take breaks often if you have to be outside.
The smoke affecting Iowa is primarily from wildfires burning in Canada, especially in western provinces like Alberta and British Columbia. Shifting wind patterns are carrying the smoke south into the U.S., including across the Midwest. These wildfires have been especially active this summer due to dry conditions and high temperatures, leading to poor air quality across several states, including Iowa.
