Tuesday night’s Ottumwa City Council meeting wrapped up with several key updates that impact local residents.
Mayor Rick Johnson proclaimed June 14, 2025, as the 250th Anniversary of the United States Army, declaring that every June going forward will now be recognized as United States Army Month in Ottumwa.
Council members approved both parts of the consent agenda, and Laura Carell shared a “Meet Ottumwa” update—more details on that will be available on our website Wednesday.
There was no public agenda this week, but several important ordinances and resolutions were addressed.
Council moved forward on an ordinance change regarding animal and fowl violations, voting to shift penalties from criminal offenses to civil infractions. They approved the second reading and waived the third, putting the new policy into place more quickly.
The fate of the old skatepark ramps, first installed in 1999, was also decided. The council approved their removal and authorized listing them for sale on GovDeals.com. The area will be cleared to make way for a new playground.
Under the resolutions portion of the meeting, the council accepted a proposal for a $550,000 general obligation capital loan, which will support local projects.
The council also set rules and rental fees for the city’s new Legacy Soccer Fields Complex. Starting July 1, the Parks Department will begin taking reservations. The fields are expected to open by the third or fourth week of August, and rental fees are set at $20 per hour.
