Ottumwa, Iowa – The Ottumwa City Council held its first meeting of the month Tuesday night at the Bridge View Center, covering a range of local updates, approvals, and citywide initiatives.
The meeting began with the approval of Consent Agenda Parts 1 and 2. Among the key highlights, Mayor Rick Johnson officially proclaimed June 19, 2025, as Juneteenth Day, and recognized June as Ottumwa Pride Month, continuing the city’s support for diversity and inclusion.
In a show of community partnership, Bridge View Center, Inc. presented the city with a check for $120,000, underscoring its commitment to Ottumwa’s ongoing growth and improvement.
During the public hearing portion, Council discussed details for the upcoming Wave Pool Painting Project. The project includes both painting and repairs to the city’s wave pool. While bids will officially open on July 24, the project is set to begin earlier on July 21, with completion expected by October 2025. The total estimated cost is $31,000.
Two updates to city ordinances were also approved:
- Fireworks Ordinance Update: Fireworks will now be allowed on July 3rd, July 4th, and December 31st, aligning with celebratory holidays.
- Animal Control Ordinance Amendment (Chapter 7): Violations related to animals and fowls within city limits will now be considered criminal offenses instead of civil infractions.
In other business, the Council approved additional hours for the Clerk of Solid Waste, helping to meet increasing departmental needs.
The next Ottumwa City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 1st.
