Ottumwa Man Convicted of Sexual Abuse as Trial Concludes

The conclusion of an Ottumwa man’s criminal trial on Friday saw him convicted on three of the 11 felony counts he originally faced.

27-year-old Simplice Nguepnang was found guilty of three counts of third-degree sexual abuse – child victim – person four or more years older (Class C felony).

Nguepnang was acquited of three counts of drug distrbution to persons under 18 and one count of third-degree sexual abuse. Earlier in the trial, four counts of human trafficking (Class C felony) were dismissed.

Nguepnang was arrested in August 2023 after a two-month long investigation. Ottumwa police say Nguepnang sexually assaulted four female juveniles, aged 14 or younger. He was also accused of providing drugs to the minors.

Nguepnang is scheduled to be sentenced on August 11th. He potentially faces 30 years in prison.
