Oskaloosa High School’s student council has once again secured its place among the nation’s top student leadership groups, earning the 2025 National Gold Council of Excellence Award from the National Association of Student Councils. This prestigious honor was awarded to only nine student councils statewide and highlights outstanding leadership, service, and innovation.

This marks the 11th consecutive year Oskaloosa has received the Gold designation, placing the school in rare company nationwide. The award process includes a detailed application and the submission of three major projects, which this year featured the council’s state initiative, a Veterans Day event, and a football concession stand fundraiser.

The Gold Council of Excellence designation is the highest level of recognition given by the national organization. It distinguishes Oskaloosa for not only the scope of its activities but also the consistent quality of its efforts over time.

A key factor in the council’s continued success is its strong leadership culture, supported by dedicated advisors and highly motivated student members. Longtime advisor Kim Gile, who also serves as the executive director of the Iowa Association of Student Councils, plays a central role in shaping the program, along with fellow advisor Jodi Steinlage.

Oskaloosa’s council is one of the largest in the state, with nearly 80 student members, and has managed to combine size with effectiveness. The group is known for its active participation in school and community events, as well as a structure that fosters student engagement and leadership development.

In addition to the national award, the student council is currently working toward earning the Honor Council with Meritorious Distinction, a state-level recognition that involves submitting a comprehensive yearbook-style scrapbook of its activities to the Iowa Association of Student Councils.

The school’s impact extends beyond local achievements. The council currently includes two state officers, one district officer, and one national representative, with plans to campaign for additional national leadership roles in the near future.

With a decade-long tradition of excellence, Oskaloosa’s student council continues to set the bar high — demonstrating what’s possible when passion, leadership, and community support come together.
