Iowa Veteran Left Without Food After SNAP Benefits Stolen

An Iowa Army veteran is struggling to get by after discovering that his monthly SNAP benefits were stolen — and used in another state.

David Schroeder, 65, said he found out about the theft when he tried to access his benefits for May. Instead of seeing his usual balance, he was shocked to learn the funds had been spent in New Jersey — a place he’s never been.

Schroeder and his niece worked quickly to report the issue to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. They’ve since submitted the necessary paperwork, but right now, there’s no clear path to getting the stolen benefits replaced.

The situation has left the veteran in a tough spot. Already living on a limited income, Schroeder is now trying to figure out how he’ll put food on the table this month.

Cases like this are becoming more common across the country, as EBT card skimming and fraud continue to rise. In many states, victims have little to no recourse once their benefits are gone.

The family is still waiting to hear if Iowa will be able to restore any of the stolen funds. In the meantime, they’re hoping awareness of the situation will lead to more protections for vulnerable recipients — especially those who served their country.
