This morning on KBIZ 102.7 FM’s Mid Morning Magazine, host Ellis Codjoe sat down with two passionate community members who are planting the seeds of something special in Ottumwa. Austin Garmon and Bailey Heilman, co-founders of the Ottumwa Community Garden, joined the show to talk about their inspiring new project focused on growing not only fresh produce, but also stronger community connections.

At its heart, the Ottumwa Community Garden is all about bringing people together. “We want to create a space where folks can grow their own herbs, vegetables, and friendships,” said Bailey. “It’s really about promoting healthy living, caring for the environment, and creating unity in the community.”

What makes this garden truly unique is that it operates entirely on a trade system—no money involved. Instead of selling produce or charging fees, they invite the community to give what they can and take what they need. That could mean donating a bag of seeds, a few 5-gallon buckets, or even some homemade baked goods.

Right now, the project is just getting off the ground—there aren’t physical garden plots yet, but Austin and Bailey are hopeful that with enough support, those will come in the near future.

In the meantime, they’re accepting donations of items that will help the garden grow, including:

  • 5-gallon buckets
  • Seeds and plants
  • Potting soil
  • Baked goods (If you would like produce but don’t garden)

The spirit behind the Ottumwa Community Garden is simple: grow food, grow relationships, and grow a better future—together.
