Authorities say an eastern Iowa man wrongly received a $60,000 deposit from his grandmother but refused to return the money.

23-year-old Jaden Cleaver of Tiffin has been charged with first-degree theft, a Class B felony.

According to the Ottumwa Police Department, Cleaver acquired the money in December 2023 through a mistaken bank deposit from his grandmother, who lives in Ottumwa. Over the course of a year, Cleaver allegedly withdrew the entire sum of money and placed it in separate bank accounts.

Court records say Cleaver admitted to withdrawing the money when his grandmother confronted him, but refused to pay her back.

A warrant for Cleaver’s arrest was issued on April 7, and he was taken into custody by the Cedar Rapids Police Department on April 11.

Cleaver was transported to the Linn County Jail. He was later freed after posting a $25,000 bond.
