A Mount Pleasant resident is facing multiple charges after police investigated a reported domestic assault involving a pregnant woman early Saturday morning.

According to court records, officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to an apartment on South Main Street at approximately 2:51 a.m. after receiving a 911 hang-up call. When officers arrived, several juveniles were reportedly found outside the residence while officers made contact with a pregnant woman inside.

Investigators allege 37-year-old Gary Jerome Stuart Jr. left the apartment before police arrived. During interviews with officers, the woman reportedly stated an argument between the two turned physical. Court documents claim Stuart struck her in the face, grabbed her by the head and face area, and threw her to the ground.

Authorities further allege Stuart kicked and stomped on the woman’s stomach while she was on the floor. Officers documented injuries that included visible marks to her face, neck, and stomach area.

According to investigators, one juvenile inside the home told police she heard the woman repeatedly yelling for Stuart to stop.

Court records also state the woman attempted to call 911 during the incident, but Stuart allegedly tried to prevent the call by taking her phone away.

The woman later left the residence for medical evaluation. Officers eventually located Stuart and took him into custody. Police say Stuart denied several parts of the allegations but admitted he shoved the woman and grabbed her face during the confrontation.

Stuart has been charged with domestic abuse assault of a pregnant person with intent to inflict serious injury, a felony offense, as well as obstruction of emergency communications, a serious misdemeanor.

A protective no-contact order was requested for the woman and three juveniles connected to the investigation. Health and Human Services was also notified.
