The Davis County Sheriff’s Office is facing a hiring challenge after all six candidates who took the civil service exam on March 29 failed to pass. Sheriff Zach Dunlavy reported the results during the Davis County Board of Supervisors meeting on March 31.
Of the six applicants, only two successfully completed the physical fitness test, but none met the requirements to pass the written portion of the exam. This setback leaves the sheriff’s office without new hires at a time when recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers remain a challenge across the country.
Sheriff Dunlavy did not specify immediate changes to the hiring process but may need to explore alternative strategies to attract and prepare candidates. The civil service exam is a key requirement for law enforcement positions, assessing applicants on critical thinking, problem-solving, and law enforcement procedures.
The sheriff’s office will likely announce future testing opportunities and may consider offering preparatory resources to help candidates succeed.
