Authorities have arrested a 51-year-old Iowa man accused of the brutal murder of a pregnant woman, who was allegedly beaten to death before her body was dumped in a shopping cart.
Donnie White was taken into custody in late March and is now facing charges of first-degree murder and nonconsensual termination of a pregnancy in connection with the death of 38-year-old Brittany Hopkins.
Cedar Rapids Police Department officers responded to a distressing scene on the morning of February 28 after receiving a report of a deceased individual near an apartment complex on Westdale Drive SW. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Hopkins’ body wrapped in a comforter, abandoned in a shopping cart. Authorities immediately launched a homicide investigation.
Three days later, police publicly confirmed the nature of Hopkins’ death and urged witnesses to come forward with any information.
Investigators identified White as the primary suspect in the murder and sought assistance from the Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force in locating him. Authorities quickly determined that White had fled the state following the crime, prompting coordination with the U.S. Marshals Service and its Nevada Violent Offender Task Force.
On March 14, law enforcement officials in Nevada tracked White to the 2900 block of West Washington Avenue in Las Vegas. Officers from the U.S. Marshals Service confronted White at approximately 3 p.m., leading to his eventual surrender without incident.
White is currently being held without bond as he awaits extradition to Iowa to face charges.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a potential motive for the killing, and the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
This tragic case has shocked the community, with many calling for justice for Hopkins and her unborn child. Updates on White’s court proceedings and further details from the investigation are expected in the coming weeks.
White was extradited back to Iowa on Sunday and is currently being held in the Linn County Jail on a $2.5 million cash-only bond
