Hy-Vee, the Iowa-based grocery chain, announced plans to close most of its in-store bars and transition its Market Grille restaurants to counter service beginning May 1, marking a significant shift in its in-store dining strategy.
While the company did not disclose how many of its in-store bars will remain open, a spokesperson confirmed that nearly all will be closing. The decision comes as part of Hy-Vee’s broader effort to refocus on a more family-friendly and efficient dining experience.
“We remain committed to providing a family-friendly atmosphere that prioritizes an exceptional experience for everyone,” said Hy-Vee spokesperson Tina Potthoff in a statement.
As part of the changes, Hy-Vee will also end full-service dining at its Market Grille locations. Instead of table service, all Market Grilles will shift to a limited-service model, with customers placing orders at the counter.
This move follows Hy-Vee’s January decision to close all 79 Wahlburgers locations within its stores. Those spaces are being converted into either Market Grille or Market Grille Express concepts.
Hy-Vee operates more than 220 Market Grille and Market Grille Express locations within its 285-plus grocery stores. The company said that most employees affected by the closures, including servers, have been reassigned to other positions within the stores.
