Albia City Council held its first meeting of the month Monday night, addressing several topics including parking concerns on South Main Street, an alley closure, and the renaming of a city road.
The meeting opened with approval of the consent agenda before moving into discussion on safety concerns raised by local farmers and CDL drivers. The concern centers around the difficulty of moving large farm equipment through South Main Street due to parked vehicles narrowing the roadway.
Farmers told the council that driving through town is often their only option when moving equipment between fields, and they fear for the safety of both drivers and pedestrians.
A proposal was presented to remove a total of 17 parking spaces — three on the north end of the street, and 14 along the east and south ends — to allow more room for larger vehicles. Council members agreed the road needs to be widened and plan to consult with the Iowa Department of Transportation before making a final decision. The matter will be discussed further at the next council meeting.
In other business, the council approved the closure of the alley located between 21 North A Street and 114 A Avenue.
Council also held the first reading of an ordinance to rename Sewer Plant Road. The council approved the first reading, moving the name change process one step closer to final approval.
Council also discussed and approved Change Order #25 for improvements to the road leading to the Sewer Plant. The change order calls for replacing the existing gravel surface with a new road surface to improve access.
An estimated 400 tons of gravel will be needed for the project. The council also approved the use of grant money to help cover the cost of the improvements.
Council also decided to re- visit the asphalt 2 blocks of street in the city’s historical section which is now brick street. Council needs more design plans and costs. of replacing streets, curbs and sidewalks
Next Albia council meeting will be held on Monday, April 21 at 6pm.
