A southeast Iowa man was arrested following a traffic stop early Thursday morning.

41-year-old Brian Newcomb of Batavia has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor), possession of methamphetamine – first offense (serious misdemeanor), and possession of contraband in a correctional facility (Class D felony).

According to a press release from the Fairfield Police Department, an officer performed a traffic stop on the 700 block of West Tyler Avenue at approximately 12:53 AM.

Authorities say the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was contacted, and a K-9 unit from the sheriff’s office was deployed to search the vehicle driven by Newcomb. The K-9 unit alerted officers to the odor of narcotics and the car was searched.

Authorities say the search unveiled drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, which led to Newcomb’s arrest.

After Newcomb was transported to the Jefferson County Jail, law enforcement found additional narcotics on his person.

Newcomb is currently being held without bond, pending a hearing with a magistrate judge.
