Egg production declined in February 2025.
The USDA says 7.85 billion eggs were produced in February of this year, down 9% from February of last year.
That was primarily due to the culling of some flocks because of the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
The number of laying hens on March 1st was 8% lower than last year, more than canceling out a slight improvement in the rate of lay per day.
There are some signs of a rebound, but that will depend on HPAI containment and eradication efforts.
55.8 million egg-type chicks were hatched in February, 2% higher, with domestic placements for hatchery supply flocks rising 6%.
784 million broiler-type chicks were hatched, a decline of 1%, while the number of pullet chicks heading to futures hatchery supply flocks were up modestly.
The USDA’s updated egg and broiler production numbers are out April 10th.
