A southeast Iowa man was found guilty of second-degree murder late last week.
61-year-old Gary Scott of Ottumwa was convicted in the stabbing death of 34-year-old Sammy Gallegos-Ramirez of Ottumwa.
Scott was charged with first-degree murder, willful injury, assault while participating in a felony, and going armed with intent after police say he stabbed Gallegos-Ramirez during an altercation in October 2023.
A jury deemed Scott guilty of second-degree murder instead of murder in the first degree after determining the lack of premeditation. Scott was convicted on the other counts.
Scott is scheduled to be sentenced on January 25. The crime of second-degree murder carries the potential sentence of up to 50 years in prison.
