Hundreds of chickens were recovered after the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in connection to an illegal animal gaming investigation.

Sheriff Gary Anderson says authorities searched a property located at 27702 Highway 5 in rural Appanoose County. The investigation pertained to a possible violation of Iowa Code 717D which involved animal contest events.

Anderson says the investigation focused on the possession, breeding, training, transfer, and sale of animals used for illegal animal contest events.

More than 400 hens and roosters were documented and a seizure in place ordered by the District Court was served.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

The Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the search warrant by the Iowa State Department of Natural Resources, U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) Office of Inspector General, USDA Investigative/Enforcement Services, and Humane Society of the United States.
