The Mount Pleasant Police Department says a man is dead after wrecking his vehicle in an attempt to flee officers after shooting at them.
On Thursday at 6:30 PM, the department received a call regarding a domestic incident. While officers were responding to the call, the suspect drove past the scene.
Law enforcement says officers attempted to make contact with the suspect but he did not stop his vehicle and accelerated through multiple intersections without obeying traffic signs.
While still in his vehicle near the corner of West Henry Street and North Jefferson Street, police say the suspect fired several shots at an officer in his patrol car.
The suspect escaped in his vehicle at a high rate of speed and lost control of his vehicle on Highway 218, according to police. Authorities approached the vehicle and determined the suspect was dead.
The identity of the suspect and the officer who was fired upon are being withheld pending notification. The officer was treated at the scene and released with no injuries.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department has requested the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to assist in the investigation. The department says no officers fired their weapons during the incident.
