The Centerville City Council held its second September meeting on Monday night.
The council approved the consent agenda, approved bills, and approved August’s finance report.
During his report, Centerville City Administrator Jason Fraser addressed concerns that there is widespread lead in the water lines of homes. Fraser says that assertion is inaccurate and the water is tested annually in homes by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Out of the 60 homes that were tested by the DNR, officials found lead in 17 of the homes, according to Fraser. However, the lead was below the federal threshold (15 parts per billion). Fraser mentioned that one home on the south end had elevated levels of lead and cited the age of the home as to why lead was detected.
Fraser says the DNR sends a letter to the affected residents in the case of lead being found in the water line of a residence.
Public Works Director Steve Hawkins says the repair work is finished on the sidewalks in the town square as the city prepares for a large crowd on Pancake Day which will take place on September 27 and 28.
Drake Public Library Director JeNel Barth informed the council of various programs that will be held at the library in the coming weeks.
Barth also mentioned the library had to reschedule its Fall Prevention Program and will add balance exercises for adults. Additionally, the library will survey homeless and at-risk individuals on behalf of the Appanoose Homeless Coalition. The goal is to identify the needs of the homeless and at-risk populations.
The next city council meeting will be held on October 7.
