A convicted Ottumwa man in possession of drugs faces charges after attempting to shoplift from Dunham’s Sports.

55-year-old David Horvath was charged with 3rd degree theft – enhanced 2 prior, interference with official acts – bodily injury, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

On August 7 at 7:00 p.m, court records say Horvath entered Dunham’s Sports on 1110 North Quincy Avenue. Authorities say Horvath placed merchandise in his backpack with the anti-theft security tags attached and left the store without attempting to pay. The items were worth approximately $39.00.

During the arrest, officers say Horvath refused to put his hands behind his back by tensing and pulling his arms to the front of his body. In the struggle, court records say an officer was cut on the forehead.

According to officers, Horvath handed them a pack of cigarette package containing marijuana with one burned cigarillo missing. Officers say they located a plastic zipper top baggie in Horvath’s pant pocket containing 3.6 grams of methamphetamine.

According to court records, Horvath has prior theft convictions dating March 2017, August 2021, and December 2022.

Court records say Horvath has a previous drug conviction dating April 2023.

Horvath was taken to the Wapello County Jail. He is being held without bond pending a hearing with a magistrate judge.
