Mary Decker


Mary Lou Decker, 91, of Ottumwa, died July 1, 2024 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born March 24, 1933 in Ottumwa to Frank Joseph Gee and Hazel Marie Hoswell. She married Warren Decker January 16, 1965 and he preceded her in death January 2, 2017.

A 1951 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Mary Lou worked 22 years for the Ottumwa Schools in food service at Wildwood Elementary serving breakfast and lunch, retiring in 1998. She then worked 15 years for Target, retiring in 2015.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star Ottumwa Chapter #112, Order of the Amaranth and King’s Daughters. Mary Lou volunteered at McCreery Cancer Center and for the Ottumwa Regional Health Center gift shop.

Mary Lou enjoyed gardening, traveling with her husband, being involved with everyone and being involved with her class reunions.

Surviving are her children, Don (Paula) Bennett of Cedar Rapids, Stephen (Pat) Bennett of Pella, Randy (Kathy) Bennett of Ottumwa and Lisa (Ken) Stek of Ottumwa; 7 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Bill Decker of Davenport as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Gee; a sister, Inez Swinscoe, sisters-in-law, Nancy Gee, Viola Leasure, Sue Decker and Luran Decker, and brothers-in-law, Harold Decker and Albert Swinscoe.

Visitation will be open at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 6th at Reece Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends one hour prior to the service.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6th at Reece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Memorial may be made to Heartland Humane Society or Whatsoever You Do Women’s Shelter.
