Families of Ottumwa Community School District are invited to connect in learning important information about children’s literacy development and engage in research-based strategies that can be implemented at home. The Community Literacy Night is scheduled for Tuesday, October 24, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Ottumwa Schools Career Campus, 331 E. Main Street in Ottumwa. Coordinating the event is Ms. Bambi Boggs, Ottumwa Schools K-12 Dyslexia Specialist, and Iowa Decoding Dyslexia Board Member.

Participants will engage in a dyslexia simulation and learn about how Ottumwa Schools are supporting struggling readers, and students with dyslexia, build knowledge about The Science of Reading, and create resources to build success at home.

There will be a Dyslexia Simulation running every twenty minutes, beginning at 5:10 PM that evening. This exercise will put you in the shoes of an individual with dyslexia. You will be able to see how dyslexia impacts an individual’s navigation of everyday reading and writing tasks. The purpose of the simulation is to learn how difficulty with decoding affects comprehension. A writing simulation will highlight the impact limited spelling and word choice have on writing. The Dyslexia Simulation times are 5:10, 5:30, 5:50, 6:10, and 6:30 PM.

A “Science of Reading” experience will showcase what reading is and what it is not, and deliver important pieces that should be in place when teaching a child to read. The presentation will deliver best practices through an instructional routine to help rewire a child’s reading brain. Science of Reading presentation times are 5:10, 5:30, 5:50, 6:10, and 6:30 PM.

Ottumwa Schools provides a high-quality literacy experience for every student and you are invited to visit with our partners in education, built to support the struggling reader. Meet with teachers to learn ways you can build success and support your child at home. You’re invited to make a take-home kit with materials to help your child on their reading journey.

Refreshments will be provided by The Bulldog Café.
