The Ottumwa Community School District will be restructuring its grades the next school year and issuing a reminder to families.
The district says these changes are part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the educational experience for our students and align with the evolving needs of our community.
The Pickwick Early Childhood Center will contain preschool and kindergarten.
1st and 2nd grade will be in Douma Elementary.
The 3rd through 5th grade will be in the new elementary school that will be located on the Douma campus.
Liberty Elementary will have 6th and 7th grades.
The 8th and 9th grades will be in Evans School.
Grades 10 through 12 will be in Ottumwa High School.
The linchpin for all these grade configuration changes has been the construction of the new elementary building on the Douma campus. We are delighted to report that the construction of Douma Elementary is proceeding according to schedule, and we are on track to open the doors of the new elementary school in August 2024.
It’s important to note that these proposed grade configuration changes will have no impact on the Northside Elementary schools.
As part of this transformation, Ottumwa Schools is also in the process of naming the new elementary school building. The district is taking this task seriously and working diligently to choose a name that reflects the spirit and values of our school community. The community will be updated on the naming process as it progresses.
Ottumwa Schools says it understands the importance of maintaining a small school feel while offering shared resources to enrich the educational experience. The new elementary school on the Douma campus will have access to resources such as a library, PE, art programs, and various other instructional spaces, while still operating independently in many respects. This approach underscores the district’s commitment to “Be the Best” and reflects the desires of our community for small, nurturing school environments.
