Evelyn Marie Johnson, 81, of Ottumwa, died at 5:20 p.m. September 11, 2023, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
She was born February 14, 1942, in Ottumwa, the daughter of Floyd B. and Lena Mae Washington Hendred.
Evelyn was a graduate of Ottumwa High School. As a military wife and later serving in the US Army, she lived at several military posts within the United States with the last posting being in southern California where she met her husband, Charles.
Ever organized and detail-oriented, Evelyn worked in office administration for the Cushing Hospital in Leavenworth, KS for over 20 years. She moved to Los Angeles, CA in 2019 and then moved back to Ottumwa in the fall of 2022.
She was a member of Fort Leavenworth Chapel – Gospel Services: she one of the mothers of the church.
Surviving are her children, Donetta Akers of Artesia, CA, James Henderson of Cedar Rapids and Michael (Dee) Sylvester of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren from Donnetta: Loren, Nathaniel, Jessica, Collin, grandchildren from James: Salia, Sarah, and Joshua, grandchildren from Michael: Duron (Kaelie) Sylvester, Devin (Raianna) Sylvester, Darian (Kate) Sylvester and Deon Sylvester; and a host (13) of Great Grandchildren; siblings, Frances Miller, Carroll Hendred, Floyd Lewis Hendred, Pastor Jeff (Sandra) Hendred and Juanita (Drake) Pearson.
She was preceded in death by parents, Floyd and Lena Washington and Emerald Green; infant brother, Gregory Mark Hendred; infant sister, Carla Diane Hendred and husbands, Clint Brown and Charles Johnson, and grandson Joshua Henderson
Visitation will be open after 1 p.m. Thursday, September 28th at Reece Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, September 29th at Hickory Grove Community Church with Pastor John Johnson officiating. Cremation will follow the services.
Inurnment will be in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, next to her husband Charles.
