A traffic stop led to multiple charges for a southeast Iowa man on the sex offender registry.

According to Wapello County Sheriff Don Phillips, the sheriff’s office assisted the Iowa State Patrol on a traffic stop with its K-9 unit Hex at 11:00 Wednesday night.

Hex alerted his handler to the presence of illegal substances in the vehicle of 27-year-old Trenton John O’Brien of Eddyville. Officers located what was believed to be marijuana in the car. O’Brien was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana (second offense) and operating while intoxicated – drugged (first offense).

After O’Brien was transported to the Wapello County Jail, authorities executed a compliance check on O’Brien who is a registered sex offender. Deputies discovered several violations of the sex offender registry. As a result, O’Brien was additionally charged with failure to comply with sex offender registry.

O’Brien is currently free after posting a $1,000 bond. He waived his preliminary hearing.
