Jack Pirtle, 90, a lifelong resident of Bloomfield, Iowa, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 10, 2024 in Marietta, Georgia surrounded by his loving family.

Jack was born to Roy and Mary (Smith) Pirtle on July 24, 1933. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1951. He married his high school sweetheart, Jean Goodman Pirtle, on June 11, 1952 in the Bloomfield Christian Church where he remained a lifelong member. The couple enjoyed 47 years together and raised three children. Jack and Jean owned several businesses in Bloomfield, including Pirtle’s Greenhouse, Pirtle’s Flower Shop, and Pirtle’s Dry Goods.

Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Pirtle; his son, Douglas Pirtle; his brother, Charles Pirtle; his parents Roy and Mary Pirtle; brother-in-law Bill Ashmead; and his special companion of 21 years, Hildred Gordy. Jack is survived by two daughters, Terri (Claude) Gordy of Augusta, Georgia and Jacque (Mitch) Colgan of Woodstock, Georgia; three grandchildren, Andrea (Ian) Mielke of Marietta, Georgia, Cason (Erin) Gordy of Salt Lake City, Utah, Gabrielle Colgan of Atlanta, Georgia; four great grandchildren Liam, Graeson, Gianna, and Sawyer Mielke of Marietta, Georgia; sister Marianne Ashmead of Moberly, Missouri; sister-in-law Patty Pirtle of Bloomfield, Iowa; sister-in-law Judy Goos of Comanche, Iowa, and many, many nieces & nephews.

Jack had a great love for his family, friends, Davis County, his old greenhouse, pink & white petunias, evening drives around Lake Fisher, chocolate ice cream, red geraniums, Marianne’s peanut brittle & angel food cakes, tomato plants, football, his hats, the Iowa Hawkeyes, cardinals & hummingbirds, coffee, Arkansas Avenue, Buck Owens’ song- “Together Again,” family photos, flying, talking about the ‘old days,’ hot food, fishing, Iowa sweet corn, gooseberry pie, mustard & pickles, and his home.

Despite being disabled with MS since the age of 28, he never once complained, but was grateful for every day. Dad, you will be missed more than you could ever know…we love you from the depths of our hearts. Until we see you again…fly high.

Mantra- “Every day is a good day.”

Jack’s services will be held graveside at IOOF Cemetery on July 27, 2024 at 10:00 am in Bloomfield, Iowa with Pastor Bob Welsh officiating.
