The Pella City Council will consider formally ending its involvement in the proposed South Central Regional Airport project during its meeting Tuesday evening.
A resolution on the November 3 agenda would officially discontinue Pella’s pursuit of the regional airport, an effort that began in 2012 through a partnership involving the cities of Pella and Oskaloosa and Mahaska County.
The proposed airport was intended to replace the existing municipal airports in Pella and Oskaloosa with a regional facility in Mahaska County.
However, the project faced legal challenges, and an Iowa Supreme Court ruling ultimately allowed Mahaska County to withdraw from the agreement.
With the partnership no longer moving forward, the South Central Regional Airport Agency will also be responsible for repaying the Federal Aviation Administration for grant funding used to acquire land for the proposed facility.
The Pella City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, at the Pella Public Safety Complex.
