A bridge on 110th Street northwest of Kalona is now open to traffic following a replacement project that began in May.

According to the Washington County Engineer, 110th Street had been closed west of Juniper Avenue, nearly three miles west of Highway 1, while crews replaced the existing bridge over Deer Creek.

The project addressed a narrow, weight-restricted bridge that had been in place since 1952. The original structure measured 125 feet long and 20 feet wide.

It has now been replaced with a larger concrete slab bridge measuring 130 feet long and 30 feet wide. The improvements eliminate the previous weight restriction and provide a wider driving surface to better accommodate two-way traffic.

The total cost of the project was $857,116.90. Funding came through the Federal Highway Bridge Program, which provides assistance for replacing structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridges.

With construction complete, 110th Street has reopened, allowing motorists to resume travel across Deer Creek.
