Iowans who have flowers and other outdoor plants they’d like to enjoy a little longer will need to cover them later today as a Freeze Warning is posted for 80 Iowa counties for early tomorrow morning.
Another 13 western Iowa counties are under freeze watches and a half dozen southeast Iowa counties have frost advisories.
National Weather Service meteorologist Tyler Ryan says it’s about to get quite chilly.
“We are expecting temperatures to fall later on tonight and into early Saturday morning, many spots will be getting into the low 30s and up in northern parts of Iowa, we could even see a couple locations get into the upper 20s,” Ryan says, “and that’s why the Freeze Warning is in effect for much of central Iowa.”
This cold spell will be temporary as Ryan says warmer weather is just a day or two away.
“Temperatures getting into Sunday, it looks like they’ll climb back into the 60s and as we head into the middle half of next week, it looks like we climb out of the freeze/frost that we’ll see Saturday morning and get back into the 70s by the middle of next week.”
In addition to covering any tender vegetation, the anticipated freeze could also damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Disconnect garden hoses and wrap a dry towel around any outside faucets to help protect the pipes.
