Marion County Emergency Management is providing additional information following a BNSF Railway train derailment Thursday afternoon north of Pleasantville.

Officials say the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. near the railroad crossing at Geneva Drive. About 25 of the train’s 57 cars derailed while the westbound train was traveling through the area.

No injuries have been reported. Officials also confirmed that the train was not carrying hazardous materials.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation by BNSF Railway.

As crews begin cleanup and repairs, Geneva Drive between Highway 5 and 40th Avenue will remain closed to through traffic until further notice. Heavy equipment is being used at the scene to remove the derailed rail cars and address damage to the railroad infrastructure.

Officials are asking the public to stay away from the derailment site and avoid attempting to access the area.

Motorists should also be aware of increased heavy truck traffic on surrounding roads during cleanup and repair operations. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and allow additional time when traveling through the area.

Responding agencies included the Pleasantville Emergency Services Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Marion County Road Department, Pleasantville Police Department and Marion County Emergency Management.

Officials will provide additional information as it becomes available.
