ohn R. Johnson, a cornerstone of the Eddyville community, left us on September 24, 2026. Born on August 15, 1939, in Monroe County, Iowa, John’s life was a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and love for his family. John was the epitome of integrity and honesty. His life was an open book, with each chapter filled with tales of strength, resilience, accomplishment and always some humor.
John’s life was a journey of remarkable achievements and humble service. As a general contractor for many years, he built not just homes but also relationships, leaving an indelible mark on Eddyville. His contributions to the region were recognized with two terms on the Eddyville City Council. His dedication to service extended beyond the council doors, as evidenced by his 50-year membership in the Mason Lodge 74 and his time in the United States Army from 1959-1963. Working alongside his beloved wife, Delores, John also managed the Eddyville Funeral Chapel from 1986-2025, offering solace and support to countless families in their times of need.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a man who deeply loved the outdoors. Camping, fishing, and hunting were not merely hobbies but a way of life. He relished the simple pleasures, like sitting around a fire ring, sharing stories, and basking in the warmth of camaraderie. Perhaps his greatest joy, though, was his family. Married to Delores Watts on August 3, 1963, John’s love story spanned 63 beautiful years. Together, they were blessed with two children, Kim and Mark, and built a life filled with endless love and laughter.
John is survived by his wife, Delores; children, Kim (Jim) Smith, Mark (Janet) Johnson; grandchildren, Kristina (Noah) Werling, Veronica (Sam) Billingsley, Lynette Smith, Jace Johnson, Talen Johnson, Kenadi Johnson; one great granddaughter, Violet Billingsley. His legacy will live on in the homes he built, the lives he touched, and the memories he created. He was preceded in death by parents, Lloyd James and Lola Gladys Johnson; siblings, Bob, Pearl Williams, Helen Akers, Jim, Don, Phyllis Harding, Myron, and Irvin. John’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love, hard work, and a commitment to community.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, opening to the public at 3:00 p.m, with John’s family present from 5-7 p.m., at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at the Eddyville Community Church with Pastor Rod Stodghill officiating. Interment with military rites will follow in Highland Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Serenity Hospice House of Oskaloosa.
