The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the two victims who died during a school field trip at a lake near Iowa City.
Twety-four-year-old Hannah Jorgensen was a fifth grade teacher at Iowa City’s Borlaug Elementary. Search crews at Lake McBride recovered her body Tuesday and the body of 10-year-old Ahmed Osman was found Wednedsay afternoon.
The Iowa City school district has issued a statement, calling Jorgensen and Osman valued members of the school community. Read the full statement below.
“The Iowa City Community School District is heartbroken to share an update regarding the tragic accident that occurred during a Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area on September 22, 2026. Hannah Jorgensen, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, and Ahmed Osman, a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary, lost their lives as a result of the accident.
“Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district. Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them.
“Counselors and additional support personnel will continue to be available at Borlaug Elementary in the days ahead. We know grief looks different for every person, and our focus will be on caring for our students and staff and giving them the time, space, and support they need.
“We are grateful to the first responders and agencies who responded to this tragedy and worked tirelessly throughout the search and recovery efforts. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office continues to lead the investigation.
“This is an extraordinarily painful time for the Borlaug community and our entire school district. We will continue to come together, care for one another, and keep Hannah, Ahmed, and their families at the center of our hearts in the difficult days ahead.”
