Baseball returned to Iowa’s iconic Field of Dreams Thursday night, and the Iowa National Guard played a visible role in the special event.
Members of the Iowa National Guard joined Major League Baseball’s return to Dyersville as the Philadelphia Phillies faced the Minnesota Twins at the newly renovated Field of Dreams site.
Guard members helped open the evening by presenting the colors, while Iowa National Guard aircraft took part in the pregame flyover. Their participation added an Iowa touch to an event that brought Major League Baseball back to the state for the first time since 2022.
The game drew fans to the famous baseball setting made popular by the 1989 movie Field of Dreams. The Phillies went on to defeat the Twins 7-1, with Philadelphia slugger Kyle Schwarber hitting two home runs.
For the Iowa National Guard, the night was about more than baseball. Soldiers and Airmen were able to take part in an event that combined Iowa history, military tradition and America’s longtime love of the game.
The Guard thanked Major League Baseball and the many organizations and individuals who helped make the return to the Field of Dreams possible.
