The Coralville Police Department has identified the human remains discovered during an ongoing investigation in the 1700 block of 8th Street as those of Grant Leonard, who was reported missing in October 2023.
According to the Coralville Police Department, investigators have continued searching the area since July 8, 2026, with assistance from several local and state agencies. Those efforts resulted in the recovery of additional human remains.
On July 29, the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office notified the department that the remains had been positively identified. Staff at the Decedent Care Center confirmed the identification by comparing dental records associated with Leonard’s missing person investigation.
Grant Leonard was reported missing from the Holiday Road area in Coralville on October 23, 2023.
While the identification provides answers for Leonard’s family, police said it was not the outcome anyone had hoped for. The department is asking the public and members of the media to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials said no additional information is being released at this time.
The Coralville Police Department also thanked the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Coralville Parks Department, the Coralville Engineering Department, the Coralville Streets Department, and the Coralville Fire Department for their assistance throughout the investigation.
