Residents across much of Iowa are being urged to take precautions as hot temperatures and high humidity push heat index values into potentially dangerous territory Monday.
The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Heat Advisory, with heat index values expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees or higher in some areas.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for people spending extended periods outdoors, older adults, young children, and those without access to air conditioning.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, limit strenuous outdoor activities, stay out of direct sunlight when possible, and spend time in an air-conditioned location. Officials also recommend checking on relatives, friends, and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.
Anyone who must work or spend time outdoors should take frequent breaks and watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
