A Van Buren County man is facing a misdemeanor assault charge following an incident at a residence in the 900 block of North High Street in Milton on Wednesday, June 24th.
Michael Vanlaningham, 45, of Milton has been charged with Assault — Insulting or Offensive Contact, a simple misdemeanor.
According to court documents, a deputy responded to a report of an assault at approximately 3:05 p.m. The reporting party stated that Vanlaningham had come onto his property, grabbed him by the neck, and lifted him off the ground. The victim told the deputy he was scared to defend himself, according to court documents.
When the deputy spoke with Vanlaningham, he admitted to the confrontation, telling the deputy he had grabbed the victim because the victim had been burning a compost pile on his property, according to court documents.
Vanlaningham was placed under arrest and transported to the Van Buren County Jail. He has since posted a $300 cash bond. His initial appearance is scheduled for July 9th.
