The U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee is expected to unveil a comprehensive farm bill text today.
On a call with reporters this morning, Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley thanked committee chair John Boozman for his work on the legislation.
“I think it would be better for us to take up the House bill, but I’m not going to argue with Chairman Boozman for the hard work he’s put in to putting together this discussion draft of a five-year farm bill that’s coming out today.”
He tells Brownfield while several of his priorities are included in the draft, language addressing Proposition 12 will not be in the Senate farm bill.
“My first step would be to get it included in the Senate bill. But let’s say we aren’t successful, then it is a conferenceable item because it’s in the House bill. So consequently it could be settled in conference.”
Grassley says partisan division remains over the nutrition program and there’s no resolution in the draft farm bill.
