An Ottumwa woman is facing multiple charges after authorities say she was involved in cashing a stolen check belonging to a deceased individual.
According to court records, the Ottumwa Police Department served an arrest warrant on 30-year-old Briana Wilkins of Ottumwa on June 5.
A criminal complaint alleges that on March 3, Wilkins asked another woman to cash a stolen check. Court documents state that Wilkins accompanied the woman to River Community Credit Union on West 2nd Street and waited outside in the parking lot while the check was cashed.
Investigators say the check belonged to a deceased victim and had been completed in the amount of $400. The check was allegedly made payable to the other woman involved in the incident.
According to court records, officials determined that the signature on the check did not match a known signature previously used by the victim. Authorities allege that Wilkins kept the proceeds from the check and gave the other woman $20 for cashing it.
Wilkins is currently being held in the Wapello County Jail on a $5,000 cash/surety bond.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 16.
Wilkins is charged with Forgery, a Class D felony, as well as Fourth-Degree Theft and Fourth-Degree Fraudulent Practice, both serious misdemeanors.
