Global uncertainty hits home: Iowa farmer changes spring input plans

A central Iowa farmer says the conflict in the Middle East has influenced some early season crop fertility decisions.

Corey Hillebo grows corn and soybeans near Polk City and tells Brownfield he applied anhydrous ammonia this spring.

“Instead of really planning to buy that in-season urea or UAN, I already had some bought for the planter (and) I moved a little bit more into the anhydrous realm just because we had it bought. And that was purely just a dollar and cents game.”

He says he regrets not booking diesel fuel months ago.

“I’m kicking myself there. I made a decision at the end of the year to not because I got told that it was trending down. And now here we are.”

Hillebo says he might have enough fuel to get through spring and hopes a de-escalation in the Middle East will soften prices.
