75 Iowa Schools Already Signed Up for Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day

Iowa schools are picking up momentum ahead of the upcoming Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day, with 75 schools already signed on to take part. The national event encourages students, parents, and school staff to leave the car behind and choose walking, biking, or rolling as a way to get to class.

Organizers say the effort is about more than just transportation—it’s about building healthier habits and creating safer, more connected communities. Matt Burkey, who serves as Director of Iowa Safe Routes to School with the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, says the event gives schools a chance to turn a simple morning routine into something fun and active. He also noted that some Iowa schools, including a few in Iowa City, have already started experimenting with “bike buses,” where groups of students ride together along set routes with adult supervision.

While participation is already strong, officials emphasize that there’s still time for additional schools to join in. The event is designed to be flexible, allowing schools to participate in whatever way works best for them—whether that’s hosting a full-scale celebration, encouraging active commuting, or simply recognizing students who choose to walk or bike that day.

Supporters say Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day helps ease traffic congestion around school zones, encourages daily physical activity, and strengthens neighborhood connections.

Schools interested in taking part can still register and begin planning their events. Registration is available at walkbiketoschool.org, and organizers are available to help with setup and planning by contacting Matt Burkey at matt@iowabike.org.
