Alta Mae Thomas, 93, of Ottumwa, passed away January 24, 2026 at Vista Woods Care Center.
She was born April 29, 1932 in St. Catherine, MO to Roy and Vida Rauer. Alta graduated high school from Linneus, MO and continued her education graduating from Parson College. She received her Master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State.
Alta married Robert W. Thomas on October 5, 1951 and were married almost 67 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bob and their daughter, Deborah.
Alta impacted and inspired many students throughout her 33 years of teaching English for Ottumwa Community Schools. She lived a life of grace and dignity. Her strong faith and determination enabled her to continue her life when there were challenging circumstances.
Alta was grateful for her many friends that took time to call, send a card or come to visit. She was appreciative for the people that cared and assisted her with tasks that became difficult for her. Each of you know who you are, so thank you.
Her body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 28th, at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Ottumwa Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, she has requested donations be made to Heartland Humane Society or Grace Church.
