Van Buren County celebrated Senior Night and inducted five new members into its athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, January 23rd, while hosting Danville in a boys and girls basketball doubleheader. Despite competitive efforts from both Warrior squads on a night filled with emotion and ceremony, Van Buren County fell in both games to the visiting Bears.
Senior Night and Hall of Fame Honors
The evening had recognition of the senior athletes who have represented Van Buren County throughout their high school careers. Girls basketball seniors Sophia Jirak and Marlee Mertens were honored alongside boys basketball seniors Lincoln Bainbridge, Jake Reid, Kayden Simmons, and Brandon Taylor. The ceremony also featured the induction of the 2026 Hall of Fame class, which included Trent Hardin, Nic Mercer, Rachael Remick Sathoff, Nathan Stecker, and Makenzie Zeitler Ostrander, all of whom have left lasting legacies in Van Buren County athletics.
Girls Basketball: Danville 44, Van Buren County 38
The Lady Warriors battled throughout but couldn’t complete a comeback against Danville, falling 44-38 in a hard-fought Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division contest that featured multiple momentum swings and competitive play from both squads.
Game Summary
Danville jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter, looking to establish dominance on the road. However, Van Buren County refused to fold, fighting back to cut the deficit to just one point at 10-9. The Bears managed to push their advantage back to 15-11 by the end of the opening quarter. The game remained tight throughout the second quarter, with Danville holding a slim 25-23 halftime lead. The Bears extended their advantage to 34-28 after three quarters, but Van Buren County continued to battle in the fourth quarter. The Warriors made several late runs, pulling within three points at 36-33 and threatening again at 42-38, but Danville managed to hold on for the six-point victory despite the pressure.
Van Buren County Leaders
Senior Sophia Jirak led the Warriors in her final home game with 12 points, three rebounds, one assist, and three steals in an emotional performance. Adalyn Snowgren contributed a strong all-around game with 11 points, five rebounds, and a team-high four assists. Senior Marlee Mertens added eight points, one rebound, one assist, and two steals in her Senior Night performance. Daphny Wells posted seven points, six rebounds, and two steals, providing solid interior play. Kayley Snowgren was a presence on the boards with five rebounds. The Warriors also received contributions off the bench from Aubrey Loeffler, Ava Loeffler, Ali Pedretti, and Elli Daugherty.
Danville was led by Alivia Bauer, who recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Bauer’s presence made a significant difference in this rematch—she did not play when Van Buren County defeated Danville 59-41 in their first meeting on December 19th, and her return clearly impacted the outcome.
By the Numbers
Van Buren County shot 31.6% from the field (12-of-38), 25% from three-point range (6-of-24), and 72.7% from the free throw line (8-of-11). The Warriors grabbed 22 rebounds, recorded six assists and seven steals, while committing nine fouls and 21 turnovers. Danville shot 35.2% from the field (19-of-54), 20.8% from beyond the arc (5-of-24), and 33.3% from the charity stripe (1-of-3). The Bears collected 29 rebounds, tallied 10 assists and 10 steals, while committing 11 fouls and 11 turnovers.
Conference Implications
Van Buren County drops to 11-7 overall and 8-5 in conference play with the loss. The defeat complicates the Lady Warriors’ race for second place in the conference standings behind #9-ranked Mediapolis, as they now find themselves in a tight battle with Danville, West Burlington, and Central Lee for positioning heading into the final stretch of the regular season. Danville improves to 10-5 overall and 8-4 in conference play, strengthening their own position in the conference race.
Coach’s Comments
Van Buren County Girls Basketball Head Coach Randy Smith reflected on the competitive game and the senior class: “Close hard fought game. Danville is very well coached and is a hard matchup to go against. Our two seniors have been a pleasure to coach and have had a huge impact on our basketball program. We are sitting at 11-7 and the main goal that those two set was to end up with a winning record. That is something that is within reach.”
Boys Basketball: Danville 55, Van Buren County 37
The Warriors showed marked improvement from their earlier meeting with Danville but still fell 55-37 in the nightcap of the doubleheader, as the Bears proved too strong in what became a tale of two different matchups between these conference opponents.
Game Summary
Danville controlled the game from the opening tip, building a 13-5 lead after one quarter and establishing their style of play early. The Bears continued to expand their advantage in the second quarter, taking a commanding 27-16 lead into halftime. Danville maintained their double-digit cushion through the third quarter, leading 41-27 heading into the final period, before cruising to the 18-point victory in the fourth quarter as Van Buren County was unable to mount a significant comeback.
Van Buren County Leaders
Kinnick Millard paced the Warriors with a game-high 17 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block in an impressive all-around performance. Will Cocherell contributed nine points, four rebounds, and three assists, providing secondary scoring and playmaking. Senior Brandon Taylor posted four points, seven rebounds, and one steal, doing his work primarily on the glass and defensively. Jace Duncan had a strong effort on the boards with four points and 10 rebounds while adding three assists and one steal. Landry Loeffler chipped in three points, one rebound, two assists, and one steal off the bench. Senior Jake Reid recorded one rebound and one assist, while Cree Kite added one assist in limited action.
Senior Lincoln Bainbridge received the ceremonial start for Senior Night, entering the game to begin the contest before substituting out after the first possession in a touching moment that allowed him to be honored on the floor one final time at home.
Danville was led by Dillan Mason, who poured in 18 points to pace the Bears’ balanced offensive attack.
By the Numbers
Van Buren County shot 32.6% from the field (14-of-43), 16.7% from three-point range (2-of-12), and 43.8% from the free throw line (7-of-16). The Warriors collected 28 rebounds, dished out 12 assists, and recorded five steals while committing 15 fouls and 14 turnovers. Danville shot 40% from the field (20-of-50), 34.8% from beyond the arc (8-of-23), and 53.8% from the charity stripe (7-of-13). The Bears grabbed 33 rebounds, tallied 16 assists and five steals, while committing 19 fouls and 10 turnovers.
Signs of Progress
While the Warriors ultimately fell short in the loss, they showed significant improvement from their first meeting with Danville on December 19th, when they fell 68-28 on the road. The 31-point improvement in margin of defeat demonstrated clear progress for the Warrior squad, which has been developing throughout the season. The more competitive nature of this game, combined with better execution and fewer mistakes, provides a foundation to build upon as the season continues.
Van Buren County falls to 5-13 overall and 1-12 in conference play with the loss, while Danville improves to 8-8 overall and 4-8 in conference play. Both Van Buren County teams will look to bounce back and finish the regular season strong as they prepare for the upcoming conference matchup on Friday, January 30th at Central Lee.
