On October 4, a routine traffic stop turned into a dangerous high-speed pursuit for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department on I-63 West. Officers clocked a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Izaiah Ulrey of Monroe going 118 mph in a 65 mph speed zone. Despite the flashing lights and sirens, Ulrey reportedly failed to pull over, prompting the sheriff to pursue him.
As the chase continued, the sheriff had to turn off his lights and sirens due to poor visibility caused by gravel and dust. Eventually, the vehicle was found wrecked in Otley, with Ulrey discovered beside it. Upon approaching, the sheriff noticed the strong smell of alcohol and observed Ulrey’s bloodshot, watery eyes.
Ulrey admitted to the sheriff that he had not only eluded law enforcement but had also consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel. Court documents revealed that alcoholic beverages were found inside the vehicle. Following his arrest, Ulrey was taken to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, where he underwent a standardized field sobriety test. The results indicated that his blood alcohol content (BAC) was significantly over the legal limit of .08.
Ulrey now faces serious charges, including eluding law enforcement (a Class D felony) and operating while under the influence (a serious misdemeanor). A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 9 at 9:00 AM, with a cash/surety bond set at $6,000.
