A Fort Madison man remains in custody following a violent assault that left a woman hospitalized with multiple serious injuries over the weekend.
Kristopher Robbin Murie, 44, was arrested Saturday, April 12, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center’s Fort Madison campus after he drove the victim to the hospital. According to medical staff, the woman had sustained significant injuries, prompting a call to law enforcement.
Police responded to the hospital at 12:48 p.m. and, after speaking with the victim, arrested Murie on multiple charges. He was transported to the Lee County Jail and booked on charges of violation of a no-contact order, domestic assault with a weapon, and willful injury causing serious injury.
According to a criminal complaint filed in North Lee County Court, the woman told investigators that she was asleep in her living room the night of April 11 when she awoke to loud banging. She found Murie standing in the doorway, despite a court-issued no-contact order prohibiting him from being near her.
The victim reported that Murie entered the home armed with a machete, a hammer, a smaller knife, and a box cutter. She told police that Murie threatened to kill her and then himself. The situation escalated into a physical assault, during which the woman sustained multiple lacerations.
At some point after the assault, Murie reportedly attempted to wake the victim and instructed her to get into her vehicle so he could drive her to the hospital. Upon arrival, hospital staff quickly assessed the severity of her injuries and contacted authorities. Murie did not have any weapons on him at the time of his arrest, police said.
The victim was stabilized at the Fort Madison facility before being transferred to another medical center for further treatment.
Murie has a history of violent offenses. He was convicted of second-degree arson, a Class C felony, in 2013 and received a suspended 10-year sentence with five years probation. Later that same year, he was convicted of misdemeanor assault.
As of Thursday, Murie remains in custody at the Lee County Jail.
It is important to note that criminal charges are allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
