Kyle Burk, 16, of Sigourney and formerly Oskaloosa, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, due to a car accident on Hwy 92.
Kyle Wesley Burk, son of Kimberly May Dykstra and Shane Dewayne Burk, was born on February 29, 2008, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. As a youngster, he participated in Boy Scouts and attended Oskaloosa schools through his first year in high school when the family moved to Sigourney, and he attended school there.
Kyle’s summer job was working at the Dollar General in Sigourney, a job he enthusiastically embraced. While in school, he was a member of the E-Sports team.
The best way to describe Kyle is loyal, inquisitive, and bright! His latest passion was chemistry, and he had aspirations of obtaining a degree in chemistry and discovering a new element, Rachealium, named after his grandmother.
Kyle was recently introduced to the stock market and has become quite proficient at trading. He had enjoyed playing chess on the computer but had recently become bored with it because of the lack of challenging competitors. He was passionate about discovering how electronics worked; he loved taking apart gadgets, building a radio, and building a new PC. He was fascinated with trains, and sports and muscle cars. Kyle was curious about everything and recently became very conscious about his nutrition and health. Although Kyle was a junior in high school, he was already researching colleges and planning his senior trip. He was excited to travel to Maine, where he would have his fill of lobster and visit Baxter State Park.
Kyle was part of the self-proclaimed “Goon Squad,” a group of four friends, Zeth Struik, Rodney Chisolm, and Anthony “Logan” Meek, that hung out at every opportunity. He also had a passion for his dogs, Zeus and Lilith; they were trained as emotional support dogs and had been taught commands in the German language. Although Kyle had many hobbies and interests, one of his favorite pastimes was annoying his brother, Silas.
Kyle’s family includes his parents, Kimberly and Billy Vanderpool of Sigourney; his father, Shane Burk of Chariton; a sister, Destiny Burk of Chariton; a brother, Silas Burk of Sigourney; paternal grandparents: Racheal Burk of Oskaloosa and Jim and Jerri Karr of Runnells, Iowa; maternal grandparents: Bill and Connie Dykstra of Eddyville and Jeanne Vanderpool of Oskaloosa; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
Kyle was preceded in death by his poppy, George Wesley Burk; his paternal great-grandparents, Harold “Doc” and Maxine Louise Burk; and grandfather, Richard Lee Vanderpool.
Funeral services for Kyle will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Central Church in Oskaloosa, with Pastor Jon Nelson officiating. The Burial will be held privately in Marysville Cemetery in Marion County. The visition will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 29, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will greet visitors from 4-7 p.m.
